The idea of usable technology was something that was kind of born in my head as a kid, when I had this fantasy that I could someday build machines people could use. And it happened!

I just got an LG VX8300, its a nice phone. To get it connected under Linux via USB I had to add a script under /etc/udev/rules.d/60-cell.rules containing
#udev entry
#Manufacturer: LG
#Models: All straight USB cables
#Vendor ID: 0x1004
#Product ID: 0x6000

SUBSYSTEM!="usb_device", ACTION!="add", GOTO="cell_rules_end"
SYSFS{idVendor}=="1004", SYSFS{idProduct}=="6000", MODE="0666"
LABEL="cell_rules_end"

I found the rules at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1317977&postcount=24 but there are a few places that mention this online. I did not install BitPim frm there but installed it myself, and I also manually copied the LG rules instead of using the install script.

And then restart Linux. There is probably a way around the last step but I don't know enough about udev to find out the easy way, so I used the big hammer.

After that I used the latest RPM of BitPim and converted to a Debian package with alien. The version I have installed is 0.9.09, the one available from Ubuntu is 0.9.04. I am not sure if it makes a difference, but I had problems so I installed the newer one.

On the phone you can go to Menu->Tools->Call Settings->Connections->USB and make sure it is enabled.

Once that is setup just start BitPim and click Detect Phone and it finds the phone as long as you remembered to plug in the USB cable. I used the USB cable with the Verizon music connection package.

So far I have editd the phone book, downloaded pictures from the camera to my PC, and uploaded mp3 ringtones to the phone.

My friend Carl told me this German proverb:
"Glück entsteht oft durch Aufmerksamkeit in kleinen Dingen, Unglück oft durch die Vernachlässigung kleiner Dinge." (http://www.zitate-online.de/literaturzitate/allgemein/16105/glueck-entsteht-oft-durch-aufmerksamkeit-in.html)

Google Translate says it means:
"Luck results often from attention in small things, misfortune often by the neglect of small things."

That seems about right.
